Helpful Healthy Hints

How to check your Body Mass Index ?
If you are worried about being overweight, healthy eating and being physically active is the best way to bring it down and keep it down sensibly.

You can check whether you are a healthy weight by working out your body mass index (BMI). You do this by taking your weight (in kilograms) and dividing it by your height (in metres) squared. So, if you weigh 65 kilograms and are 1.73 metres tall, you would have a BMI of 65 (1.73 x 1.73) = 21.7

Under 18.5 is considered underweight, over 25 is considered overweight, and over 30 is obese. A BMI of below 18.5 is undesirable and you may need a healthier diet with regular meals and exercise. It might be worth having a health check with your GP to help you make the changes you need.

Detecting breast cancer and other breast conditions
Breast screening is a way of detecting breast cancer at a very early stage. The first step involves an x-ray of each breast`s a mammogram, which is taken while carefully compressing the breast. The mammogram can detect small changes in breast tissue which may indicate cancers that are too small to be felt either by the woman herself or by a doctor.

Few Parenting Tips

Parenting in today`s world is a tremendous challenge. Parenting is unique to each culture, but culture as we have known it for generations, is dwindling. Added to this the phenomenon of break up of traditional joint families, working parents who seem to have so little time for their children and the rude invasion of the cool westernising way of life all around us is contributing to the new generation of worried parents and their super-brats or badly behaved children. All this is especially true when we Indians migrate to a foreign country like Australia.

Parenting is acquired through keen observation, modeling and sometimes by trial and error and is transmitted from generation to generation in this manner. These skills take their roots when the parent is experiencing his or her childhood. For example children often hear their parents say, When I was at your age...

The first few years of a child`s life are crucial. There is no such thing as, she/He is too young! He will not know/ understand! How you behave with and talk about others in front of your children will be imitated. Be conscious of what you say and do and set them a good example Very important to listen to and communicate with the child at his/ her level at every age As parents, try not to lose your temper/ fight in front of your children

Decide on clear enforceable consequences for undesirable behavior beforehand and discuss this with your child when he is calm. For example, just out of the blue, do not say, How dare you throw your toy! No chocolate for you for one week. And then give him a chocolate in a few minutes to make him stop crying. Create an atmosphere where your child can feel comfortable talking to you about anything. This includes culture clash, relationships, sex and drugs.

Do not be defensive/ apologetic about the Indian culture. Be knowledgeable and proud of it, and be prepared to discuss it with your children. Children make mistakes. Practice forgiveness and do not carry grudges. Look for at least two good things your child has done everyday and give him a hug and praise him for it. Never lose an opportunity to bolster your child`s self esteem. However try to avoid direct comparisons.

Give at least 15 minutes in a day unconditionally for your child for the two of you to do something, which your child likes to do together. Your children have to walk the tightrope of life. As parents you must be the safety net underneath.
